Common Questions about Portable Oxygen Concentrators

Below is a list of common questions that have been asked about the popular Inogen G5 and the OxyGo NEXT portable concentrators.

Can the G5 and NEXT be used at night?

They are both one of the newest portable oxygen concentrators on the market. And thanks to high tech delivery technology, the unit can provide patients with the required oxygen therapy on a 24/7 basis. They are a portable oxygen concentrator that can be used during the day or during the night without any problems.

The G5 and NEXT are pulse flow machines meaning that it detects your breathing and only delivers oxygen when you inhale as opposed to continuous flow concentrators that deliver a constant stream of oxygen. However, both units have a backup feature that will release oxygen every few seconds if no breathe is detected after about 40 seconds. Before using either machine make sure you speak with your physician.

Does using oxygen make your lungs weaker?

Unfortunately, breathing 100% oxygen for long periods of time can cause changes in the lungs, which are potentially harmful. Researchers believe that by lowering the concentration of oxygen therapy to 40% patients can receive it for longer periods of time without the risk of side effects. Portable oxygen concentrators do not delivery 100% oxygen, so they are safe to use.

Which is better pulse or continuous flow?

While pulse dose works for many people, there are some medical conditions where it is not an option. If you require oxygen at night, many doctors will recommend a continuous flow machine for nocturnal or night time use. That being said, many patients can still use a pulse dose machine during the day time hours.

Can the G5 and NEXT be used while charging?

Leaving your unit plugged in past the full charge time will not harm the concentrator or the battery, so they can be used as they are charging. But keep in mind that using the concentrator while charging will increase the duration of the charging cycle

How long do the G5 and NEXT batteries last?

Longer battery life — up to 6.5 hours run time on the single battery; up to 13 hours run time on the double battery. They can be charged at home or on the go. They are designed for 24-hour use.

How long do the columns last?

Columns should be replaced every 12-18 months. Both units will alert you when they need to be changed and you should have about 30 days to replace them.

How many liters of oxygen does the Inogen G5 and OxyGo NEXT produce?

They can generate up to 1260ml of oxygen in 6 settings (6 liter equivalent per minute).

What is the life expectancy of an oxygen concentrator?

Depending on how often your unit is used and how well it is maintained, the life expectancy is around 4-7 years. Maintenance for the ave

rage portable oxygen concentrator is very minimal, and usually only consists of cleaning a filter.
